Team USA's journey in the 2002 World Championship ended Tuesday in Gothenburg's Scandinavium with a 3-1 loss to Finland in the single-elimination quarterfinals, with the Finns advancing on to Thursday's semi-finals to face either the Czechs or Russians.
The United States finished the tournament with a 3-3-1 mark, and their final standing in the 2002 World Championships will be determined following the completion of the quarterfinal round. Derian Hatcher, Ted Donato, and Steve Konowalchuk were named Team USA's best three performers of the tournament in ceremonies following the contest.

Update ... Canada Edges U.S. For Top Group D Spot
The battle for the top seed in Group D at the 2002 IIHF World Championship was won by Canada 2-1
over Team USA.
Ted Donato scored late in the first period to give the U.S. a 1-0 lead, but Canada rallied for a pair of goals in the third to take the win and hand Team USA their first loss of the tournament. The U.S. still advances to the qualification round, where they will take on Switzerland at 10 a.m. Thursday in Karlstad. Ted Donato told IHWC.net, "I thought we carried the play for two periods, but they outplayed us in the third. Their goalie made some great saves for them and it was a very good hockey game."
